Morton Video Productions is a film production company specializing in videos/DVDs related to regional and community planning with an emphasis on smart growth concepts and principles in an energy constrained world. The Center for Community Environmental Management is an organization (not-for-profit status pending) devoted to providing educational materials, including those produced by MVP, to facilitate smart growth. The following videos are currently under production and should be released in the following order over the next few months:

  • Smart Growth: The Alternative to Suburban Sprawl
This video presents examples of new urbanist communities from Massachusetts to Florida. One of the greenest examples of the new urbanism in North America presented in the video is, Prairie Crossing in Illinois, a transit oriented, conservation development wherein nearly three hundred and fifty acres of the six hundred acre development have been restored as native prairie. This development also has a 120 acre vegetable farm which is consistent with one of the principles of the new urbanism. The video contains interviews with leading new urbanist architects, planners and developers. (28 minutes).
  • Passive Solar Building Design: Harnessing the Sun’s Energy
This video illustrates the concepts and principles underlying passive solar housing design including placing the long side of the building and bulk of the windows perpendicular to the sun, reducing windows on the building’s north side, using high performance insulation on all six sides of the building, and constructing a “heat energy battery”. Passive solar building design can substantially reduce energy costs/requirements by capturing “free” energy from the sun. It is critical that we change the way our housing and commercial building infrastructure is designed and constructed in an energy constrained world. Passive solar building design is the direction for the future. This video illustrates the construction procedures from bare ground to completion at several building locations. The video features Bruce Brownell, President, Adirondack Alternate Energy who has designed and constructed passive solar homes for over 40 years. (55 minutes).
  • Survival Kit for the Energy Crisis
This video consists of footage and interviews with leading authorities on the energy situation in North America and Europe. The video is separated into the following four parts:
Part 1 – Peak Oil: The End of Cheap Energy
Part 2 – Assessment of Alternative Energy Sources
Part 3 – Consequences of Peak Oil Production and the Assessment of Alternative Energy Sources
Part 4 – Strategies That Can Be Adopted by Federal, State and Local Levels of Government and Individuals to Soften Our Landing in an Energy Constrained World.
